At Urban Science, we’re dedicated to providing the next generation of leaders with the knowledge, skills and support they need to thrive in STEM fields that are often harder to find – and navigate – across underrepresented communities. That’s why we continue to invest in blazing new pathways to STEM education and careers, so our future leaders have the resources they need to reach their full potential.

One of the ways we channel this focus is by supporting nonprofits and other organizations that share this passion. In recognition of some of these efforts, we were recently named Corporate Partner of the Year by The Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD). The award honors organizational partners of the nonprofit who have gone above and beyond to support their mission of promoting and celebrating excellence, innovation, cooperation, professional growth and fellowship in the engineering, scientific and allied professions. Since 2020 alone, our company has donated over $225,000 to help support the organization carry out its strategic goals – further carrying our mission to champion the next generation of STEM leaders.

Urban Science Founder and President Jim Anderson recently accepted this award at ESD’s Annual Dinner. Several Urban Scientists who have spent time volunteering with ESD were in attendance including Chris Boumansour, global vice president, as the night celebrated achievements in engineering, design and construction.

Urban Science is a founding sponsor of ESD’s Girls in Engineering Academy (GEA), which was designed to get more underrepresented, minority middle school girls in metro Detroit excited and engaged in STEM education with a specific emphasis on engineering. Today, some 160 middle and high school girls participate in the program.

Since launching in 2017, our partnership has not only provided the GEA with monetary gifts, but skills-based volunteerism and mentoring from our Detroit-based team members. This includes an annual STEM immersion day, during which we welcome 10th grade GEA members into our Detroit HQ to learn more about our company and the various career paths in today’s technological landscape.

The support of partners like Urban Science has been and will continue to be vital to the success of GEA and its members,” said Robert Magee, executive director. “These collaborations have helped enrich the academic learning experience providing the GEA girls with invaluable opportunities to observe engineering in action, engage with female engineers and visit engineering facilities during our summer field trips.”

On behalf of Urban Scientists everywhere, we’re proud to align with and support the work of The Engineering Society of Detroit and Girls in Engineering Academy and look forward to our continued partnership. The non-profits work embodies our vision of a world in which innovation is powered by science and inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit to invent a better future.
