Earlier this month, more than 30 Urban Scientists who work in our company’s Detroit headquarters recently came together and rolled up their sleeves to support the Life Remodeled Six-Day Project, which set out to clear brush and blight from the front yards of vacant properties – and to beautify the four-square mile area surrounding the Durfee Innovation Society (DIS) on Detroit’s west side. DIS is home to education services, workspace development spaces and a variety of human services that are often unavailable to underrepresented communities and plays a key role in unlocking new opportunities for Detroiters.
This year’s Urban Science turnout was our strongest yet and we’re grateful to have worked alongside the 3,822 volunteers from 173 businesses, churches and other organizations who beautified more than 150 blocks during this year’s Six Day Project. Through these efforts, and our ongoing relationship with Life Remodeled, we proudly support the organization’s mission to create intentional, equitable and sustainable revitalization of Detroit neighborhoods that makes our city safer.
“One of the most gratifying aspects of our team’s work with Life Remodeled is seeing the impact our team’s work – and the investments Life Remodeled makes – have on people and neighborhoods throughout the city,” said Brittany Aller, senior manager, Urban Science. “In speaking with the residents who live near Durfee Innovation Society, it was clear these efforts are critical in creating a place where kids can safely walk to school and additional community and economic development opportunities are created as a result of Michiganders helping Michiganders, regardless of which zip codes we live and work in.”
While the pandemic has required us to make some changes to our volunteerism initiatives in 2021, our team members were eager to return to in-person service this summer and fall, and to our work with Life Remodeled, which has implemented several measures – including face covering requirements, pre-job briefings and equipment tutorials, and personal protective equipment guidelines – to promote health and safety for everyone involved. And while the on-site experience may have been slightly different than previous years, our company’s support for employees to pursue their passions is stronger than ever.
“At Urban Science, we’re encouraged to discover our unique formulas for success through a wide range of benefits – including paid time off for volunteering – available to our team,” said Aller, who also volunteered to aid Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in New Orleans. “Community service is a key ingredient of my formula and I’m grateful to work for an organization – and alongside a team – that embraces, and leverages, our collective ability to make a positive impact on those who need us most.”
